Avid hikers will love the rich nature, cascading waterfalls and rocky countryside of Madeira. There are lots of different routes and trails to suit all hiking abilities that stretch to the highest points. If you're up for the challenge, climb through rugged terrain along the mountain to the island's third highest peak, Pica do Arieiro, standing high at 1,818 metres.

The challenging trek is best done with clear skies as the trail climbs higher than the clouds. It can be reached by car but the unbelievable, panoramic views found at the top are a fantastic reward for those who have walked.

For those looking for something a little less exhausting, the tropical garden in Funchal is ideal. Wander through the trees as you surround yourself in nature. The colourful floral decoration and green foliage is like a landscape found in a fairy tale; truly spectacular.
